International competition on human rights: Students from the university of Pisa in the finals

(8 February 2017) The European Human Rights Moot Court Competition is a mock-competition organised by the European Law Students Association (ELSA) in collaboration with the European Council. It is open to universities in 47 different countries that also make up the European Council. Four law students from the University of Pisa will be participating in the finals. The University of Pisa team was selected among the 20 teams that will be participating from February 12 to February 17 in the finals in Strasbourg. The team is composed of Vieri Biondi from Pisa, Livio Del Carlo from Viareggio, Martina Guarracino from Padova, and Benedetta Ridarelli from Gubbio. They are all between 22 and 25 years of age. This year’s theme is terrorism, with particular regards to adopting special legislation in case of national emergency and in relation to legislation that protects the physical integrity and privacy of every individual. THE WINNERS GO TO THE EUROPEAN HUMAN RIGHTS COURT

The first phase of the competition consists of creating two 20-page memoires in English– one for each party – on an ad hoc case. In these, the teams will have represented and argued the applicant’s reasoning and those of the convened State, respectively identified as ‘Applicant’ and ‘Respondent’. On the basis of the documents produced, the 20 best teams have been selected to compete in Strasbourg and to discuss their case, in English, in front of the European Human Rights Court. In this context, students will have to play to the part of lawyers for the two sides and try to convince the jury with their arguments in order to obtain the highest number of points. The winners will be awarded with an internship at the European Human Rights Court.
