Italy on top of world biochemistry research

(February 22, 2017) The International Foundation on Polyamines new president is Enzo Agostinelli, Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of Sapienza University, known for his research on non-invasive cancer therapy, opening new perspectives on the treatment of drug-resistant cancer. The international research group, coordinated by the biochemist of Sapienza, is studying a new therapeutic application that uses the high polyamine content present in cancer cells, capable of becoming a source of cytotoxic metabolites as a result of interactions with specific metal enzymes belonging to the amino oxidase group. "Our aim is to develop a therapy that prevents those, sometimes devastating, side effects that cancer patients are exposed to with current therapies," explains Enzo Agostinelli, "and also to open new perspectives for those who suffer a halt in the treatment, due to the fact that cancer cells may develop over time a strong resistance to drugs ". ABOUT / AGOSTINELLI’S RESUME

The appointment has come as coronation of an intensive research path conducted by Enzo Agostinelli at Sapienza University and in many foreign laboratories in the USA, Canada, Brazil, China, Japan, Taiwan, India, South Africa, Turkey, Russia and various European Union countries, as proven by numerous publications (over 130 contributions from articles and books published in prestigious international journals and more than 200 communications at national and international conferences) mainly dedicated to the identification of non-invasive cancer therapies based on the use of polyamines, aliphatic amines of low molecular weight, with an important role in the cell growth and differentiation.
