Cinema: An encounter with James Ivory at the Italian Cultural Institute

(9 March 2017) In 1987, “Room with a View” received three Oscars for best adapted screenplay, costume design, and best art direction. Thirty years later, the Italian Cultural Institute of New York will host James Ivory in conversation Professors and authors André Aciman (distinguished professor at the Graduate Centre of the City University of New York where he teaches History of Literary Theory), Antonio Monda (film director, essayist and professor at the New York University Tisch School of the Arts; artistic director of the Film Festival in Roma and the literary festival ‘Le Conversazioni’ (Conversations); co-founder and curator of Open Roads/New Italian Cinema at Lincoln Centre). The event will take place on March 28 at 18:30. Luca Guadagnino’s film “Call Me by Your Name” is based on Aciman’s novel of the same name written with James Ivory and Walter Fasano and was showcased this year at the Sundance Festival.

The Italian Cultural Institute of New York is located in a 1919 neo-Georgian/neo-federal style Park Avenue building built by architects Delano & Aldrich. The five-storey building with an interior courtyard and terrace, was designated a ‘landmark’ site by the City of New York along with other buildings in the area. Other landmarked buildings in the area are the Italian Consulate General, 690 Park Ave built in 1917 by Walker & Gillette; The Spanish Institute 684 Park Ave and the Americas Society 680 Park Ave.
