Friuli Venezia Giulia: a bridge between Europe and Latin America

(March 9, 2017) Three days of meetings in Uruguay and Argentina for the President of the Friuli Venezia Giulia, Debora Serracchiani, accompanied Assessor Gianni Torrenti and Italian Ambassadors in those countries, Gianni Piccato and Teresa Castaldo. A mission in which it has been outlined a strategic role of the free port of Trieste as a key to access, upon potential manipulation, to agri-food exports to South American markets which open at the crossroads between the Mediterranean and the Adriatic-Baltic route. The meetings in Buenos Aires with the ministers of Science, Education and Technological Innovation, Lino Barañao, Transport and Infrastructure, Guillermo Dietrich, and Foreign Affairs, Susana Malcorra, "were extremely important as crowned by a commitment we made with the Argentine government to arrive at the signing of an agreement on some important areas that we talked about these days: sea economy, technological innovation, research, food, i.e. anything that is interesting and sees an affinity for both of our countries and in particular for Friuli Venezia Giulia, at the moment", explained Serracchiani, thus summarizing the outcome of the series of high-level talks that she had in recent days at the institutional mission launched in Uruguay and completed in Argentina in conjunction with the States-General of the fellow countrymen from FVG in Latin America. The meetings with the ministers of Buenos Aires led, therefore, to "identify - according Serracchiani - the opportunity of an institutional framework within which to strengthen and define in a systematic collaboration that already exists with Argentina in many sectors and that the Friuli Venezia Giulia region intends to power". From the visit to minister Malcorra, the last in order of time, it has emerged the major role of Friuli Venezia Giulia on the international stage, due to its geographical position, its equipment and projects on the infrastructure front, the particular characteristics of the port of Trieste , the worldwide prestige of its scientific research centers and technology but also to the very own role of a special region. ABOUT / AN INTERNATIONAL VOCATION

Thanks to the already-proven ability to establish international relations with other countries, Serracchiani and Argentine Foreign Minister believe that Friuli Venezia Giulia will contribute to further approchement processes between Europe and Latin America at a time when Mercosur, the mercantile union of some of the leading South American States, tries to reconnect cooperative relations with the Old Continent. An international role confirmed by the summer summit on Balkans to be held in Trieste in the presence of leaders of the European governments.
