THE EXHIBITION

Arturo Toscanini was born in Parma on 25th March, 1867. Teatro alla Scala celebrated the 150th anniversary of his birth and the 60-year anniversary of his death with a series of public programmes starting with the exhibition “Arturo Toscanini. The Life of an Immortal Maestro” and culminates in a concert directed by Riccardo Chailly. The exhibition was curated by Harvey Sachs and Franco Pulcini at the Museo Teatrale alla Scala, on show until June 4. The exhibition is a virtual tour realised along with Rizzoli Libri Illustrati, who also published the catalogue, curated by Professor Marco Capra and made possible by the exclusive support of Salini Impregilo. The exhibition, inaugurated on March 21st, opened to the public every day from 9 to 17:30, whereas the catalogue will be available in bookstores from March 16th. The Teatro all Scala and its museum intend to celebrate the director who brought the Theatre to a new level of musical excellence following new knowledge of the 20th century, while paying a tribute to a man who has remained faithful to the democratic ideals of Mazzini and Garibaldi. The musical perfection, the focus on theatre, and the absolute commitment to performance, are all tied to Toscanini as an artistic and leadership figure. After Toscanini, the role of the orchestra director changed within the Teatro alla Scala and beyond. His work is also tied to the introduction of German repertoires among the Italian public. In fact, in 1930 Toscanini was the first orchestra director not part of the German school of thought to direct the Wagner Festival of Bayreuth.
