The Italian-Albanian archaeological missions: a day in memory of Sara Santoro

(April 11, 2017) The Italian Institute of Culture in Tirana, in collaboration with the Politecnico of Bari and Universities of Bologna, Chieti-Pescara, Foggia, Macerata presents: "The Italian-Albanian archaeological missions. Study Day in honor of archaeologist Sara Santoro ". The date is April 21 (16 -18) at the Archaeological Museum of Durres. The program includes greetings by Adriana Frisenna - director of the Italian Institute of Culture in Tirana, Alberto Cutillo - Italian Ambassador in Albania, Luan Përzhita - Albanian director of the Archaeological Institute and Massimo Bianchi, husband and collaborator of Professor Santoro. As part of "The Italian-Albanian archaeological missions. Results of the research conducted in the last year" will intervene Roberta Belli and Luigi Caliò (Archaeological Mission in Byllis, Politecnico of Bari); Enrico Giorgi and Giuseppe Lepore (Archaeological Mission in Phoinike and Butrint, University of Bologna); Sonia Antonelli (Archaeological Mission in Durres, University of Chieti-Pescara); Roberto Perna (archaeological mission to Hadrianopolis and in Drino valley, University of Macerata). In the "In Memory of archaeologist Sara Santoro", screening of the video made by students and colleagues of Professor Santoro coordinated by Dr. Brunilda Licaj, University of Durres. Speakers will be Giuliano Volpe: "Sara Santoro, a life for archeology in Italy and Albania" (University of Foggia); Afrim Hoti: "The contribution of Prof. Sara Santoro in the development of archaeological research in Durres" (University of Durres). Presentation of Barbara Sassi volume "Dyrrachium III. History and archeology of a port city between East and West ", ed. Edipuglia. (Red) 


ABOUT / SARA SANTORO

Sara Santoro (1950-2016) was an Associate Professor of Archeology and History of Greek and Roman art, Archeology of the Roman Provinces and Methodology of archaeological research at the University of Parma from 1997 to 2009 and Roman Archeology at the School of Specialization in Archeology of the University of Bologna (1998-1999). She was called at the "G. d'Annunzio" University in Chieti-Pescara as professor of classical archeology in 2009, where she was a popular and followed lecturer among the students. Her multi-faceted and versatile research ranged from Greek and Roman urbanism to craft production, from archeometry to methodology, from Roman painting to ceramics. From 1982 to 1994 she was director of the Archaeological Museum of Bazzano. She directed from 1988 to 2005 the excavation of the Castelraimondo del Friuli fortified site, and oversaw the creation of the archaeological and cultural Castelraimondo Park. From 1998 to 2005 she was scientific director of the project "Insula del Centenario" in Pompei, University of Bologna, and oversaw the publication in several volumes. From 2001 to 2004 she was scientific director of the project "Durres" at the University of Parma. The activities at the invitation of the Albanian authorities, were addressed in particular at the implementation of measures of training and update of operators and technicians in the protection, restoration and promotion of culture. She has also coordinated the creation of the archaeological risk map of the city. Since 2004 she has been director of the pilot project of the Italian Archaeological Mission in Durres, financed by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, directing the excavation of the Roman amphitheater in partnership with the Institute of Archeology and the Institute of Monuments of Culture of Albania and she cooperated to numerous rescue excavations at various points of the city, as well as several reconnaissance campaigns in the northern area of the region.
