Exhibitions,

(May 16, 2017) Milan explores Egyptian culture in the Greco-Roman age: it does so with an exhibition that will be inaugurated tonight at the Civic Archaeological Museum, Corso Magenta 15. Exhibition "Milan in Egypt. The excavations of Achille Vogliano in Fayum ", together with findings and works from Tebtynis and Medînet Mâdi (Egypt), two important sites investigated by the Milanese papirologist in the 1930s. The excavation campaigns carried out by Achille Vogliano in Fayum, thanks to the support of the City of Milan, have increased the knowledge of this region, particularly relevant to the history of ancient Egypt, greatly enriching the Milan collection. The exhibits on display show us a vivid picture of the life of an Egyptian village of the Greek-Roman age and allow us to rethink the evolution of Egyptian culture at that time, highlighting the multiethnic character and the successful integration of different cultures. Some works, mainly statues and steles that the scholar brought to Milan, are largely unknown to the public, not being exposed in the permanent collection at Castello Sforzesco. (Red)

ABOUT / THE EXHIBITION

The exhibition, which will remain open to the public from May 17 to December 15, also uses photographic documentation of excavations kept at the Civica Bibliotheca Archeologica, is the result of the collaboration between the Civico Museo Archeologico of Milan, the Papirological Center "Achille Vogliano" 'University of Milan and the University of Pisa's Egyptology Course, which continued the archaeological investigation and the enhancement of Medînet Mâdi's site, initiated by Vogliano.
