(1 June 2017) The Italian Institute of Culture of Amsterdam celebrates Luigi Pirandello's 150th anniversary of his birth, with the event "Ripensare Luigi Pirandello" (Rethinking Luigi Pirandello) on Thursday, June 8th, from 16:00 to 18:00. The conference, curated by Gandolfo Cascio (Universiteit Utrecht) and Claudio Di Felice (Universiteit Leiden), will see Daniela Marcheschi as the Keynote speaker (who will hold an interview titled "Re-read Pirandello's humour"); Sander Grasman, and Minne de Boer. The event is organised by Wis (Werkgroep Italië Studie) in collaboration with the Italian Institute of Culture. The Farnesina Network is involved in the celebrations for the Nobel Prize-winning author, Pirandello, with conceived within an integrated promotion framework to be articulated in various sectors (literature, theatre, cinema, Italian language teaching, cultural tourism), and will have a significant satellite event in October within the Italian Language in the World Week which is dedicated, this year, to "Italians at the cinema, the Italian language in cinema". THE IIC

Italian Language and Culture were first promoted in the Netherlands, by Cultural Attaché of the Italian Embassy to The Hague in 1952. In 1972, the Cultural Office moved to Amsterdam where an old 1687 aristocratic palace was purchased and became the official seat of the Italian Institute of Culture in the Netherlands. In the early years, the advancement of the Italian language was carried out in collaboration with the local Dante Alighieri Society. In the 1980s, the IIC launched courses independently from the Dante Alighieri Society.
