Ambassador Maccotta’s visit to Chiapas, Mexico

(21 June 2017) In recent days, Italy's ambassador to Mexico, Luigi Maccotta, went on a mission to the state of Chiapas, where he was received by Secretary of State Juan Carlos Gómez Aranda and representatives of the Secretariats of Public Safety and Tourism. "During the meeting with the consular correspondent Miriam Stival, possible collaborations between Italy and Chiapas in the economic, tourist, and cultural sector were explored" according to the Embassy website. At Hotel Villa Mercedes in San Cristobal de las Casas, Ambassador Maccotta then met many members of the Italian community in Chiapas upon invitation by Miriam Stival and Claretta Gagna. The meeting was also attended by President Municipal, Marco Antonio Cancino Gonzalez. Simultaneously to this visit there was a mission by the head of the Consular Chancellery, Paolo Epifani, which allowed to collect fingerprints of the compatriots requesting issuance / renewal of the passport. THE AMBASSADOR


Luigi Maccotta is the Italian Ambassador to Mexico City on 14 November, 2016. Maccotta was born in Paris in 1953. After graduating from Political Science at the University of Rome, he entered a diplomatic career in 1981 and began serving in the Press Service and the General Directorate for Economic Affairs. In 1984 he was assigned to the Italian Embassy in Tel Aviv, where he remained until 1989, after which he was appointed as First Secretary for Emigration and Social Affairs at the Italian Embassy in Bern. He then become the commercial councillor in Tokyo. He returned to the Farnesina in 1993, where he served in the General Directorate for Development Cooperation. In 1998 he served in Washington as First Councillor. Once again, at the Farnesina in 2002, he was assigned to the General Directorate for Mediterranean and Middle East Countries, and later, after being appointed Plenipotentiary Minister, he was appointed Coordinator of the 'Iraq Task Force'. In 2005 he was Deputy General Manager for Sub-Saharan Africa until 2007, which is also when was appointed Italian Ambassador to Caracas. Upon his return to Rome in 2010, he was first appointed as the Vice-Director General for Globalisation and Global Issues / Central Director for Latin America and later, General Inspector of the Ministry and Offices abroad.
