Ports: Puglia-Albania confronting on security and customs

(June 21, 2017) "Methodologies and tools to optimize the controls of people, means and goods in the Port of Bari": this was discussed at the Regional Cabinet Hall of the Regional Presidency during a meeting urged by the authorities of the Albanian government in Italy and organized by the Coordination of International Policies of the Puglia Region, in agreement with the Cabinet of the President. The meeting, which was particularly awaited by the parties, brought together the summits of the Apulian authorities and authorities in charge of the matter in order to tackle problems related to the streamlining of logistics, customs and security procedures in the Port of Bari, especially and in particular in relation to the foreseeing of an increasing volume of traffic, already intense throughout the year, in the coming summer months. At the summons promptly responded attending the meeting with analyzes and operational proposals, the President of the Port Authority System of the Southern Adriatic Sea, the Port Authority of the Levant, the Customs Agency, the Harbor Master's Office in Bari, Bari Finance Guard, State Police and Border Police, Central Administration of Immigration and USMAF-SASN in Bari for the Puglia section; the Albanian Police Liaison Officer and the Consulate of Albania in Bari for the Albanian side. At the end of the works, everyone agreed on the launch of an intergovernmental table for effective cooperation aimed at streamlining procedures and upgrading logistics in order to facilitate the flow of goods and passengers between the Port of Durres and Bari, while maintaining all security requirements for both parties. ABOUT / NEW PROPOSALS

From the joint reflections, it has also emerged the will to lay the foundations for greater coordination between the operators of the port of Bari, known as the "gate of Europe" and that of Durres, the "Balkan door", also seeking an understanding with the ship-owners operating between the two territorial realities and optimizing ferry arrivals and departures, avoiding unnecessary overlapping hours. Finally, the idea of setting up an Association of Port Authorities in the Lower Adriatic and Ionian Region, under the auspices of the Puglia Region, has also been proposed, including other Italian authorities, as well as Greek, Albanian and Montenegrin, to network and to work jointly with the aim of re-designing Corridor VIII and the enhancement of programmatic interventions under the Ionian Adriatic Macroregion Strategy (EUSAIR), optimizing actions and financial resources, also of a Community nature.
