South Africa celebrates Fellini: shows and screenings at the National Arts Festival

(June 22, 2017) Tribute to Federico Fellini at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown, South Africa, from June 29 to July 9. The Italian Cultural Institute of Pretoria participates in the Cinema section of the festival, with a series of events that revolve around the figure of the great Italian director. The exhibit "Food in Federico Fellini’s Drawings" will be exhibited at Atherstone Room (1820 Settlers National Monument, Fort Selwyn Drive). The exhibition consists of 19 works drawn by the director at various times of his career coming from his famous Dream Book, the dream journal kept by Fellini for about thirty years. The exhibition is accompanied by two films (screenings Monday July 3 at 10:00 and Wednesday, July 5 at 12:30): "Food in the Cinema of Fellini ", an editing by Giuseppe Ricci that combines most of the Fellinian film sequences in which there’s Food, and "The Long Way" (1997) animated short film by Andrej Khrzhanovskij based on Maestro's drawings, with the screenplay by the poet and writer Tonino Guerra. The exhibition, organized by Pretoria IIC in collaboration with the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown, is made possible thanks to the Association Federico Fellini Foundation, the Cineteque of the City of Rimini, the Emilia-Romagna Region Department of Culture. At the Festival, the Institute of Culture of Pretoria also features two masterpieces by the director: "La Strada", with projections on Saturday July 1 at 11.30 and Tuesday July 4 at 10 am at the Olive Schreiner Room, 1820 Settlers National Monument at Fort Selwyn Drive , And "Le Notti di Cabiria", with projections on Sunday, July 2 at 12.30 and Thursday July 6 at 10 am at the Olive Schreiner Room, 1820 Settlers National Monument, Fort Selwyn Drive. Both films are in Italian with subtitles in English. (Red)

"Le Notti di Cabiria" tells the story of a young prostitute who, despite the difficulties of her situation, never loses optimism. "La Strada" is an anthropological fable that tells the story of Gelsomina, a simple country girl who is sold to a wanderer and faces a difficult lifestyle with courage and determination.
