Pirandello and 'Sicilianness' - a debate at the Italian Institute of Culture

(4 July 2017) At the 150th anniversary celebrations of Luigi Pirandello's birth, Italian Nobel Prize winner for Literature in 1934, the Italian Institute of Culture, Osaka organises a conference on Saturday, July 8 - from 17:00 to 19:00 titled "Pirandello, difficult author? After reading his stories, let us travel to discover Sicily" which will be the main focus of Professor Naomi Takeya, an expert in Sicilian literature. On June 28, it was the anniversary of the playwright's birth whose works are among the most represented in Italy and abroad. Along with Dante and Shakespeare, Pirandello is the most read and translated author in the world. Naomi Takeya dedicated her studies to Pirandello: "Charmed by Sicily, I have been going there regularly for 30 years". In this conference, besides presenting the particular urban landscape that is encountered every time one visits the birthplace of Pirandello through photographs and DVDs, I will speak with the anthology 'The Sicily reading in the stories' (Tanpen de Yomu Sicilia, Misuzu Shobo, 2011) that I edited and translated, of 'Sicilianness', with her strong chiaroscuri, which is at the heart of the work of the Nobel Prize winner. NAOMI TAKEYA

Born in Kobe in 1948, she holds a Ph.D. from the University of Kyoto, and as a fellow of the Italian government, she studied at the Sapienza University in Rome. She is already a full professor of Italian literature at the University of Arts of Osaka
