Teatro Regio of Turin on a world tour in the name of Verdi and Puccini

(19 July 2017) The international activities of Turin’s Teatro Regio continue. From August to October, four tours will see the Regio around the world to commemorate ten years of international programming during which the Turin institution acted as ambassador of Italian culture to the world. After the latest tours in Lugano, Geneva, and Buenos Aires, the Regio has received four more invitations abroad under the direction of the musical director Gianandrea Noseda on the podium of the Orchestra and the Regio Chorus, the latter directed by Claudio Fenoglio. In August, the region will be “Resident Company” at the Edinburgh International Festival. The festival showcases the best of the musical and theatre landscape not only of Europe and to commemorate its 70th anniversary. It requested the Regio to be the emblem of Italian excellence during three productions: two operas and one concert for a total of eight events: Macbeth by Verdi, La Bohème by Puccini and The Requiem Mass by Verdi. On September 1st, the Teatro Regio Chorus is working on the production of the concerto version of Verdi’s Aida at the Gstaad Menuhin Festival in Switzerland. Noseda, now at the London Symphony Orchestra with Kristin Lewis, Francesco Meli, Anita Rachvelishvili and Simone Piazzola; chose ‘his’ trusted chorus with whom he has a close professional relationship developed over many years of intense and passionate work. Within the context of the 11th MiTo SettembreMusica Festival in Milan, the Teatro Regio Orchestra presents a programme dedicated to the sounds of nature recreated by Dvorák, Smetana, and Beethoven on September 6th at 21:00. Following Milan, the Orchestra departs for Oman (September 14-17). They have been invited to inaugurate the 2017-2018 season at the prestigious Royal Opera House of Muscat. Noseda is the director of the Orchestra and Chorus in the production of Verdi’s Aida and the scenography is by the Oscar-winning Willian Friedkin. Following Edinburgh, Gstaad, and Muscat, the Orchestra will return to Turin for the most awaited rendez-vous: the inauguration of opera season with Tristan and Isolde on October 10th. Soon after, on the 24th, the Regio has already been invited to Paris at the Théatre des Champs-Élysées to carry out the concerto version of Verdi’s Macbeth. (Red)

PRODUCTION

The new Teatro Regio was inaugurated on April 10, 1973 with Giuseppe Verdi’s opera I Vespri Siciliani featuring Maria Callas and Giuseppe di Stefano. Since then, their production activity has crossed many milestones. 1990 they celebrated their 250th anniversary, in 1996 they celebrated the 100th year since their ‘first’ ever production of La Bohème on live TV, in 1998 they celebrated the ‘new’ Teatro Regio’s 25th anniversary with an important acoustic restoration, and in 2006 they celebrated the extraordinary adventure of the 10th Winter Olympics and the Culture Olympics.
