Italy's commitment to the reintegration of former combatants in Sudan

(13 September 2017) The inauguration ceremony and commissioning of computer material recently donated to Sudanese institutions by the Italian Cooperation was held at the headquarters of the Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration Programme (DDR) in Khartoum thanks to the Italian Agency for Cooperation and Development (AICS) in Khartoum. The inauguration was attended by the DDR General Commissioner, the Director for International Cooperation of the Sudanese Foreign Ministry, the Ambassador of Italy in Sudan, Fabrizio Lobasso and the Director of AICS Khartoum, Vincenzo Racalbuto. The donation of around €25,000 included crucial IT material for DDR planning and development work, such as laptops, servers, printers and, above all, online programmes for the identification and registration of former combatants, whose reintegration into civil society and in the job market is an absolute priority for Sudan's administration. "This new intervention by the Italian Cooperation in Sudan is part of the Italian support for strengthening the building capacity of the DDR and local institutions as a direct contribution to the stabilisation of the country and the long-term development of an inclusive strategy for vulnerable populations and for the civil society affected by war" said Ambassador Lobasso. REINTEGRATION

The DDR's commitment to stabilisation and pacification in the country has so far enabled the reintegration of approximately 38,000 ex-combatants into Sudan's society, with a total demobilisation of approximately 54,000 units.
