Forty years without Maria Callas, Nicaragua honors the Divine

(September 19, 2017) 40 years have passed since the death of Maria Callas: on September 16, 1977, disappeared in Paris "the Divine", the most acclaimed opera singer in the world. Many are the initiatives around the world to hail the artist's entry into the myth. Appointment at 7.30 pm on Wednesday, September 20 in Managua, where a concert will be organized thanks to the renewed collaboration between the National Theater Ruben Dario, the most important Nicaraguan cultural institution, and the Embassy of Italy in Managua. The program, based on the arias of the most famous operas performed by the great artist, includes the performance of, among others, Rosa Pérez and Stefano Cresci. Equipped with a special voice - which combined a unique volume, great extension and agility that allowed her to sometimes sing even as a contralto - Maria Callas contributed to the rediscovery of the Italian repertoire of the first half of the nineteenth century (the so-called "belcanto renaissance"), in particular that of Vincenzo Bellini and Gaetano Donizetti, whom she gave a personal reading in a dramatic way (fundamental her interpretations of Norma and Lucia of Lammermoor) through the rediscovery of the nineteenth-century vocalism called “canto di bravura”, which she applied to all the repertoires and for which the “dramatic agile soprano” definition was coined.
