Cinema: “€2.00 an hour” is a film by Andrea D’Ambrosio based on crimes that took place in Southern Italy in 2006 set in Montemarano, an anonymous reflection of a poor South, the expoitation of workers, and gender discrimination in the work place. The film talks about work, love, and an ever-escaping youth. The film will be screened on September 20th in Tirana in the context of International Human Rights Film Festival (September 18-23, 2017) with the presence of D’Ambrosio. The film received was awarded best film and best leading actress, Chiara Baffi at the Bari International Film Festival. The event was organised at the Italian Institute of Culture of Tirana in collaboration with the Film & Multimedia Marubi Academy and the participation of foreign diplomatic and cultural representatives based in Tirana. THE PLOT

“€2.00 an hour” is about Gladys who, through her love for Aldo, strives to get out of a life spent in a sweat shop for Blasi, an aggressive small-time businessman, who due to the economic crisis, had to adapt his illegal sweat shop in a garage. Rosa, her colleague, who lives her adolescence between the escape from reality, her love for her boyfriend Nicola and a conflictual relationship with her father, Franco. A beneficial relationship of trust flourishes between the two women. Work continues in the factory under the attentive gaze of Blasi, listening to songs and stories from the everday life of his workers. This is the way of life in many Southern Italian towns, inventing a job in order to survive hoping and waiting for a different life until, one day, reality takes the upper hand…
