Italy is once again at the forefront of promoting gender equality in Sudan. "Sustainable development and poverty alleviation in Eastern Sudan: Empowering women in agribusiness and fishing value chains in the Red Sea State" the initiative was launched in accordance with the signed agreement between UNWOMEN and the Italian institutions. The project, funded by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS), with 250,000.00 Euros, will be implemented by UNWOMEN in close collaboration with the AICS headquarters in Khartoum. Sustainable and inclusive development; credit access; vocational training and job creation for women in eastern Sudan: these are the main goals of the project. The activities will focus on the transformation of food products - particularly fish, a valuable and under valued resource in Red Sea - by improving the competencies of the beneficiaries both in micro-business management and in product transformation and marketing techniques. Easier access to credit and the spread of better technologies will enable high-nutrition foods, especially baby foods, to be produced. The project, in line with the AICS strategy in Sudan and the National Strategy for Women's Empowerment, will involve 500 beneficiaries from the rural and peri-urban areas of the Red Sea, with particular focus on the most vulnerable women of society.
