New Instruments For Fighting Combating Malaria From The Field Of Genomics

(12 dicembre 2017) 212 million cases and 429,000 deaths: over 90% in sub-Saharan Africa. 2015 data on malaria is clear: although in the last decade the global infection rate was halved, the impact of prevention strategies in Africa has been modest. On December 7th, the international "Anopheles gambiae 1.000 genomes (Ag1000G)" consortium - established as part of the International Network on Malaria Genomics and Epidemiology (MALARIAGEN) precisely to remedy this problem - presented the results of a research study that offers new perspectives for the study and control of malaria in Africa on the journal "Nature".  Italy also contributed to this international effort thanks to the participation of Alessandra della Torre, Beniamino Caputo, and Giordano Bottà of the Medical and Molecular Entomology Group of the Department of Public Health and Infectious Diseases of the Sapienza University and the Istituto Pasteur of Rome.
