Transforming urban biological waste into new biological products all within a single biorefinery: this is the goal of RES URBIS (RESources from URban Blo-waSte), a European research project worth over €3 million in which the Purification Agency participates on behalf of the Autonomous Province of Trento. Coordinated by the La Sapienza University of Rome, the RES URBIS project sees the participation of 21 actors from 8 different European countries (Italy, France, Denmark, Portugal, United Kingdom, Spain, Croatia, and Switzerland). Within this group there are 9 universities (including those in Bologna, Venice, and Verona), two research institutes, 8 members of the industry, and 4 public administrations. Biological waste in this case refers to organic waste such as food waste, waste from gardens and parks, and excess sludge produced in wastewater treatment. The bio-products to be produced from this are fibers, solvents, and different types of bioplastics. (Red)
