From Monday to Friday, BigItalyFocus provides an information overview, ranged from development aid to made in Italy
(28 November 2018) Treating tumors with accelerated particle beams (ions and protons) using non-conventional high-power lasers and plasma technology. This is the scientific and technological challenge that will test the ELIMAIA infrastructure (ELI Multidisciplinary Applications of Laser-Ion Acceleration) inaugurated on November 27th in Prague along with its key component: ELIMED (ELIBeamlines Medical and multidisciplinary applications) for preclinical activities of the new adrotherapy centre under construction in Prague. ELIMED was realised by the National Laboratories of the South (LNS), and the National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN) as part of the European project ELI (Extreme Light Infrastructure). Once operational, ELIMED will be the first of its kind in the world: it will have avant-garde equipment for research in physics, dosimetry, and preclinical activities. The inaugural ceremony was attended by an Italian delegation, led by Fernando Ferroni, president of INFN, accompanied by the Italian Ambassador for the Czech Republic Francesco Saverio Nisio who commented: "I share the pride with which the National Institute of Nuclear Physics presents the ELIMED beam line, a real diamond in the sector, completely developed in Sicily by the National Laboratories of the South. I am particularly pleased that this high product of Italian research is part of a European collaboration and further enriches the scientific collaboration research between Italy and the Czech Republic ".
