It is time for a review and the Traffic Police, as it does every year, summarizes the operations carried out in 2022 to guarantee the safety of drivers. In 2022, there were 420,816 patrols on the road who checked 1,782,491 persons and contested 1,438,419 traffic offences. There were 421,973 speeding offenses, 30,560 driving licenses revoked, and 40,019 registration certificates revoked. The lowered driving license points totaled 2,120,631. 415,995 drivers were screened with breathalyzers and precursors, of whom 13,448 were cited for driving under the influence of alcohol and 1,181 for driving under the influence of narcotics. 957 cars were confiscated. There are 166 sections controlled by the Traffic Police using the new "Tutors," which went into service in December 2021, for a total of about 1,550 km of regulated highway carriageways. The number of accidents has grown since 2021. In particular, compared to a 7.1% rise in total accidents (70,554 vs. 65,852 in 2021), fatal accidents (1,362) and deaths (1,489) climbed by 7.8% and 11.1%, respectively, while accidents with injuries (28,914) and wounded individuals (42,300) grew by 8.4% and 10.6%. The trend of road accidents is increasing compared to 2021, during which mobility restrictions were in place to contain the pandemic, while data are decreasing compared to 2019 - the reference year also for ISTAT for the assessment of the accident trend - (-8.3% for fatal accidents and victims, -9.2% for accidents with injuries, and -13.2% injured people).
