With the post-Epiphany Sunday, approximately 5 million Italians have come back from the holidays away from home, driven by the anomalous heat that has penalized many of the lovers of skiing and the tourist income, especially in the Apennines. Altogether, there are more than 13 million Italians who have decided to go on holiday at the end or at the beginning of the year, with a strong increase of 13% compared to last year and a decided turnaround after the difficulties of the last two years. There was a strong orientation to stay in Italy, which this year was chosen as a destination by 87% of holidaymakers. On the podium of favorite destinations are cities and art resorts with 54%, followed by mountain resorts with 23%, while the rest is divided among countryside, seaside and thermal baths. 57% chose to stay in their own homes or with relatives and friends while 34% preferred hotels although alternative formulas such as bed and breakfasts and farmhouses still resist. The average expenditure for holidays is 575 euros per person with an increase of 28% compared to last year and an average duration of six days with 33% being out for at most three days, 32% from four to seven days, 30% from eight to fifteen days and the remaining 5% choosing to stay out for longer. In addition to walks, sports and cultural routes, among the amusements there is food and wine, with a strong interest in the discovery of local products. More than a third of the budget has been allocated to the table to consume meals in restaurants, pizzerias, trattorias or farmhouses, but also for street food or specialties in markets, festivals to bring home as souvenirs. Nutrition has become the main item of the tourist budget also thanks to the immense historical and cultural value of the national food and wine heritage that is widespread throughout the territory and on whose enhancement many of the opportunities for economic and employment development depend.
