The clash continues between the Italian government and non-governmental organizations that deal with the search and rescue of migrants in the Mediterranean Sea with their own ships. On Sunday the new case once again concerned the Geo Barents, a search and rescue ship of Doctors Without Borders, which after taking on board 73 shipwrecked people obtained as a landing port that of Ancona, a city located on the Adriatic coast many hours away from the central Mediterranean. Geo Barents then asked to dock closer but the Interior Ministry refused the request. The 73 survivors on board come from Sudan, Nigeria, Chad, Eritrea, South Sudan, Niger, Ghana and Egypt. Geo Barents then asked the Italian authorities to make a transfer of the 73 shipwrecked from Geo Barents to Ocean Viking, another ship currently in the Mediterranean, larger than that of MSF, but also in this case the request was rejected on the basis of the recent decree issued by the government, which prohibits such operations. “From where we are now, Ancona is 3 days away from navigation, and the navigation conditions are adverse,” explained Fulvia Conte, head of relief of Geo Barents. “On board we have people who have escaped from detention centers in Libya. One boy has burn marks, another has a bullet in his knee from recent torture.” Today, meanwhile, the meeting between Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and the President of the European Commission Ursula Von der Leyen is expected in Rome, with the issue of migrants at its center.
