In Italy, over 36 million residences are registered. A little more than 25 million are occupied permanently. The remaining around 10 million are empty. 29.7% of all residences are empty. This number fluctuates significantly between territories. Valle d'Aosta is the region with the highest rate of empty houses, at 56.73 percent. Molise (46.66%), Calabria (44.54%), and Abruzzo (41.11%) followed. Bolzano (24.19%), Lombardy (23.70%), and Lazio (21.79%) are the regions with the lowest percentage of vacant homes. Sondrio is the Italian province with the greatest percentage of permanently vacant residences, at 57.04 percent. Followed by Aosta (56.73%), L'Aquila (55.09%) and Imperia (51.98%). These are all regions where more than half of the dwellings are unoccupied. Monza and Brianza have the lowest numbers (16.59%), followed by Cagliari (14.26%), Milan (13.11%), and Prato (12.61%). The situation of vacant homes is intimately related to low birth rates and depopulation.
