The cat is one of the most popular pets in Italy. It is curious, independent, and (in its own way) affectionate. The cat is also one of the undisputed stars of social media and the perfect date for single people from all over Italy. It is not surprising that there is an all-Italian festival dedicated to it: on February 17, in fact, the National Cat Day is celebrated annually, a date chosen back in 1990 to celebrate domestic felines in Italy, but which varies from country to country. Idealo, a comparison website, reports that pet product-related online searches have increased significantly (+15%) over the past 12 months. This is especially encouraging given that the industry as a whole experienced a real boom during the years of the Covid-19 pandemic. Specifically, online interest in cat products grew by about 22% during 2022, with a growth trend mainly related to the food and health sectors dedicated to them. Suffice it to say that, of all the research related to the animal world, 8% is related to cat food, while as many as 30% to the so-called "pet medicine". Because of their devotion to their feline companions, Italians spend a lot of money on luxuries and necessities for their cats. Research on cat litter (+41% from 2020 to 2021), kennels (+32%), grooming products (+16%), and cat food (+16%) has increased over the past year, with tailored suggestions made to ensure the happiness and health of your pet. Regrettably, inflation has also hit this sector hard, which is why cat care now costs more than it did a year ago at this time. Cat-related inflation peaked at 11% in January 2023 and has remained above 10% consistently since June 2022. Kennels and carriers (+19%), cat litter and accessories (+15%), and scratching posts (+5%) all saw higher price increases than the national average over the past year.
