The use of artificial intelligence systems to produce works of art risks having a disruptive impact on copyright as we know it today. The artists, in fact, accuse the companies producing ChatGPT & co of exploiting their works to develop software that creates images, music and more without the consent of the artists themselves and without remunerating them in any way. In this scenario, European artists are organizing to protect their rights. Visual artists, cartoonists, illustrators together with publishing houses and professional unions from different European countries have created the European Guild for AI Regulation (EGAIR) to propose to the European institutions a regulation on the exploitation of data and creative works by AI companies. At the forefront of the initiative are the Italian artists of Mestieri del Fumetto (MeFu), the association for the protection of comic artists that in recent months has carried out an intense work of connection with the networks of professionals in the sector from all over Europe, also launching a fundraising campaign on the web and proposing the signing of a Manifesto in defense of the rights and creativity of the human being. The promoters explain that EGAIR represents the response to the rapid and uncontrolled development of some AI applications that use billions of data and images raked on the web for profit without ever asking and obtaining the consent of the owners of the works.
