Margherita Cassano will be the first woman President of the Court of Cassation. She was indicated as the only candidate for this position by a committee of the Superior Council of the Judiciary, and she will take office from March 5, when the current president, Pietro Curzio, will retire. Cassano was born in Florence in 1955 and began her career in 1980, in the public prosecutor's office of her city, dealing with cases related to drug addiction and drug trafficking. She then undertook investigations into organized crime, until the election to the Superior Council of the Judiciary. In 2003, she led the first criminal section in the Court of Cassation with the role of judge, then returned to Florence as President of the Court of Appeal and from 2020 again in the Court of Cassation as deputy president. Now she's ready to scratch another “glass ceiling.” The Court of Cassation, which is based in Rome, is the supreme body of Italian justice and represents the third and last degree of judgment in a trial. Unlike the Court of First Instance and the Court of Appeal, which deal with both the reconstruction and the evaluation of cases, the Court of Cassation has the task of verifying that the rules have been interpreted and applied correctly.
