Entrepreneurship represents one of the most dynamic areas related to the foreign presence in Italy. Even in the years of economic crisis (2008, 2011, 2020), the phenomenon has always recorded expanding trends. The situation as of December 31, 2022 was 761,255 foreign-born entrepreneurs (10.1% of the total) and 575,673 predominantly foreign-owned businesses (11.2%). The number of immigrant entrepreneurs also increased in the past year (+1.1%), while the number of Italian-born entrepreneurs declined slightly (-0.8%). The top two countries by number of entrepreneurs in Italy are China (77,541) and Romania (75,801), which together account for one-fifth of immigrant entrepreneurs. In the past year, the communities with the most significant increases were Albania (+7.4%), Egypt (+3.9%) and Pakistan (+3.5%), while Bangladesh is stable, having seen a doubling of its entrepreneurs over the past 12 years (+136.8%). At the sector level, the highest incidence of foreigners is in building (17%), trade (13.5%) and catering (12.7%).
