Schools are also paying a heavy price for the demographic crisis. In six months, the number of pupils attending Italian classes will be 127,000 less than this year. Moreover, the projects issued by ISTAT research center are also clear: if the route is not reversed, by 2050 there will be 5 million fewer Italians, including 2 million young people. It is as if in less than 30 years all the inhabitants of Veneto or Sicily disappeared. In addition, only 52% of the population would be of working age, since 16% would be under the age of 20 and 32% would be retired. Not only that: births would go from the current 399 thousand per year to 298 thousand, far from the minimum target of 500 thousand for a correct demographic balance. The decrease in pupils is also likely to have repercussions on teachers' staff. On this point, in recent days, a meeting was held at the Ministry of Education and Merit regarding personnel for the next school year 2023/24. According to the unions, the demographic decline should become an opportunity to form fewer classes.
