The use of digital payments is slowing down in Italy. This is according to the 12th Report on Means of Payment Trends by Minsait Payments. With the health emergency over, although electronic means of payment were still preferred by half the population in 2022, cash has gained ground, returning to being the preferred means of about one in three Italians for physical purchases. In fact, 30 percent prefer using cash or bank account debits. Another 24 percent of Italians, though diversifying, prefer to pay with debit, credit or prepaid cards. However, users are not always able to pay as they would like: about 40 percent said they had to adapt over the past year and had to pay with a different means of payment than they would have liked to use. The main impediments included not being able to use their preferred means of payment in 19 percent of cases, technical issues preventing their use in 15.3 percent, and other reasons such as costs associated with the transaction in 11.5 percent. Adoption of credit, debit, and prepaid cards is down from last year: 81.7 percent of the surveyed population had a debit card in 2022, down from 85.9 percent in 2021; and 50.9 percent had a credit card, down from 58.9 percent in the previous year; prepaid card use also decreased to 55.9 percent from 66.8 percent in 2021.
