In comparison to other types of crimes, computer crimes have seen the most growth in recent years, and they now represent a real emergency in Italy. This is the conclusion of a study presented on Friday, May 5, by the Directorate of Criminal Police and Eurispes. Over a fifth of Italians (21.6%) say they have been victims of fraud when they shop online. The second most common computer crime is deception in requests for money - by people pretending to be friends or relatives in trouble (18.7%), and the third is theft of authentication data such as name, password, bank details, and so on (17.8%). This is followed by false identity deception (someone on the Internet has faked an identity different from the real one, declaring a false name, sex, marital status, age, profession), which occurred to 14.4% of respondents, and identity theft (someone appropriated his profile on Social to steal money or for scams / false declarations or to send emails / viruses), which occurred to 13.7% of respondents. One in every ten Italians has experienced cyber stalking, and 9.1% has had their email account compromised. Slightly less common ransomware (computer viruses that render computer data inaccessible and demand a ransom to restore them) and another hateful form of "digital violence": revenge porn, which consists of the dissemination, without consent, of intimate photos or videos, through social or digital platforms, with the intent to denigrate and deeply embarrass the person portrayed, often for revenge (6%).
