The 106th edition of the Giro d'Italia ended yesterday with the 21st and final stage: 126 kilometers covered entirely in a circuit in the center of Rome. The stage was won in a sprint by Britain's Mark Cavendish, while the general classification was won by the Slovenian Primoz Roglic, who had arrived in Rome already sure of the pink jersey after winning Saturday's uphill time trial in Friuli Venezia Giulia. In second place in the general classification, detached by 14 seconds, was Welshman Geraint Thomas; in third was Portuguese Joao Almeida, more than a minute behind. Damiano Caruso, on the other hand, was the first of the Italians in the overall standings with a fourth place finish. For Roglic, who is 33 years old and rides for Jumbo-Visma, it was his first victory in the Giro. Awarded at the Fori Imperiali by Italian President Sergio Mattarella, he also became the first Slovenian rider to win the race in its 114-year history. It was his third participation in the Giro: four years ago he had finished third after several days in the pink jersey. At the Tour de France, however, things had gone less well for him. In 2020 he lost at the last to compatriot Tadej Pogačar; in 2021 he retired, and so did he in 2022, where, however, he was instrumental in teammate Jonas Vingegaard's victory. The other prizes in this Giro d'Italia went to Italian Jonathan Milan, winner of the points classification leader's cyclamen jersey, Frenchman Thibaut Pinot, best climber who therefore got the blue jersey, and finally to Almeida, who at 24 years old won the white jersey as the race's best young rider.
