The Church must open "a humanitarian space" in order to "promote a just peace as much as possible" in order to achieve this. Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, president of the CEI, speaks in public for the first time about his peace mission in Ukraine after his return from Kiev. "I believe," says the Pope's envoy, "that the first to want peace are the Ukrainians and their soldiers who are in danger. Justice and peace are the key issues. Without the other, neither can exist. Therefore, everything must be done to bring about Ukraine's return to peace and justice". "The mission the Pope entrusted to me has become mediation, a peace plan, and an expectation has been created so that this visit seemed to bring about a significant change right away," Zuppi continued. "In Bergoglio's mens, it wasn't. The true reading is that the Pope does not surrender to war; he does not accept the logic that war always carries within itself of the geometric progression of violence. Kissinger stated a few months ago that an exploratory dialogue was required in order for this conflict to be more than an inclined plane. What's left must be discovered through listening." But what question does Zelensky have for the Pope? "Zelensky wants to include the international community in his own peace plan, which he has developed. The humanitarian aspect is one that the Church is more concerned with. With all the various and potential implications, the humanitarian area will unquestionably be the most crucial. And I have to be evasive here".
