"This is the fourth mysterious death in less than two months. This is not an isolated case, it could be poaching, malicious acts. We will send a complaint to the Trento prosecutor's office to ask them to open an investigation into possible human involvement in the suspicious deaths of bears. We want the autopsy in order to access the records and understand more". These are the words of Walter Caporale, President of the National Association of Italian Animal Rights activists, who yesterday recalled how in less than 50 days four bears have mysteriously lost their lives in the Trentino woods. The first, in chronological order, had been a cub about 3-4 months old, found in lower Val di Sole last April 22. The following week had been the turn of the discovery of M62, spotted by a group of hikers in an impervious area of the woods above San Lorenzo Dorsino. The animal, in this case, had been recognized immediately because of its ear tags. M62, in fact, was a specimen already known because of its tendency to approach inhabited areas with the intent to feed. A capture and culling order from the province was hanging over him, pending the go-ahead from Ispra. The third case, on the other hand, dates back to early June, and had occurred not far from the place where young runner Andrea Papi lost his life last April 5. Again, the cause of death is not yet known. The hope is that the body of the fourth dead bear in Cavedago, fortunately found already a few days after the death, will instead allow for a clear answer to the case.
