An Italian summer in great shape. According to the estimates of the ENIT agency based on Data Appeal studio and data of the UNWTO organization for the summer period, airport passengers expected in Italy according to today are at least 1,844,000, of which 84% are of international origin and 16% are Italians. At least 944,000 arrivals are expected in June, an increase of +8.6% over 2022. Already the first quarter of 2023 has shown the first signs of great growth in flows: between January and March 2023, international tourism increased by +86% compared to the same period in 2022. About 235 million tourists traveled abroad. There are about 15 million international travelers to Italy, an increase of +42.0% over 2022 and a recovery of 87.7% over the same period in 2019. People choose Italy mainly as a vacation destination (about 30 percent of travelers) and for business reasons (21.4 percent). But also to visit relatives and friends (14.6 percent) and for shopping (11.8 percent). 71.7 percent of flows come from European Union countries, mainly from France and Germany. 18.3% from outside Europe, mainly from the United Kingdom. According to UNWTO estimates, in the first quarter of 2023, international arrivals reach 80% of pre-pandemic levels (-20% on January-March 2019), supported by strong results in Europe (-10%) and the Middle East (+15%). The short-term outlook on international tourism, especially in the months leading up to the summer season, far exceeds those expressed for 2022. Overall, nearly 70% of experts expect superior performance for travel between May and August. Fifty percent expect a better outcome, while 19 percent are even more optimistic.
