In 2022, EU countries granted protection permits to 384,245 asylum seekers, a 40 percent increase over 2021. According to Eurostat data, among asylum seekers granted protection permits in the EU in 2022, 44 percent were granted refugee status, 31 percent were granted subsidiary protection, and 25 percent were granted humanitarian protection (which also includes special protection). Compared to 2021, the number of refugee statuses granted increased by 22 percent, subsidiary protection grew by 48 percent, and humanitarian protection had the highest increase with 72 percent. Germany is the EU country that has issued the largest number of protection permits, amounting to 160 thousand, representing 41% of the EU total; Italy is third with 40 thousand positive outcomes (10% of the EU total), preceded by France (50 thousand, 13%) and followed by Spain (36 thousand, 9%). Together, these four countries received 73 percent of the EU-wide applications for protection. Added to the 384,245 protection permits granted in the EU in 2022 are the more than 4 million temporary protection permits issued to Ukrainian citizens fleeing the conflict. Among EU countries, it is neighboring Poland that registered the largest number of Ukrainian beneficiaries of temporary protection, with a total of 1,561,700, followed by Germany (777,000 Ukrainian beneficiaries) and the Czech Republic (458,000). Italy, ranked fifth in the EU, granted 150 thousand temporary protection permits to fleeing Ukrainians in 2022.
