Pluralism of information "feeds the democratic life and freedom of Italians" and is enriched by the multiplicity of independent publishers, and therefore "it is the task of the Republic to support publishing initiatives starting with equal conditions of enterprise and access to the market". These are the words of President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella in a message sent yesterday to the Italian Periodical Press Union, on the occasion of a conference at the Senate for the 127th anniversary of the review Il Vomere. Publishers, Mattarella explained, "are entrusted with a great responsibility" at a time when "the landscape of sources is rapidly changing: in the free world, the exercise of democracy is based on knowing how to recognize facts from opinions". According to Mattarella, "the authenticity of information is entrusted by laws to the deontology of each journalist; it would be unimaginable to think of third-party bodies certifying the lawfulness of information".
