A magnitude 4.8 earthquake shook Florence and the majority of Tuscany and Emilia during the night, causing a large number of people to take to the streets in both the capital and the smaller cities. At this moment, no injuries have been recorded. The main event occurred at 5.10 a.m., with its epicenter at Marradi at a depth of 8.4 km, and was preceded by a much weaker (magnitude 3.3) shock at 4.48 a.m. After the main shock, there was a seismic swarm consisting of at least eight weaker aftershocks, with the epicenter moving towards Tredozio, in the province of Forlì-Cesena, where buildings, including the town hall, were damaged. Schools in the tremor-affected districts were shuttered for safety reasons, while the Florence-Faenza railway line between Borgo San Lorenzo and Marradi was suspended as a precautionary measure. According to the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, the swarm may persist.
