Italian girls and boys take advantage of connection for multiple activities, starting with instant messaging, used by 93 percent of 14-17 year olds. Other favorite online activities of teens include: watching videos (84 percent, growing), frequenting social media (79 percent) - with Facebook in drastic decline while Instagram, TikTok and Snapchat gain ground - and using video games (72.4 percent). These are some of the data from the 14th edition of the Atlas of Childhood at Risk, entitled "Digital Times", released by Save the Children. If girls frequent social media more consistently and intensely (84 percent vs. 74 percent of boys), gaming engages boys more (81 percent vs. 64 percent of girls), although female video gamers are on the rise. Video games - which in Italy are an ever-expanding market 47 percent represented by young people between the ages of 6 and 24 - are social places where children and adolescents also build their identities. In addition, young people also use the connection to inform themselves: 28.5 percent of 11-17-year-olds read online magazines and newspapers (a percentage that rises to 37 percent in the 14-17 age group) and exploit social media as information channels, although they do not always claim to know how to defend themselves from the pitfalls of fake news.
