The Superbonus "was the biggest gift ever given by the Italian state to scammers and gangs of criminals, leaving Italians in a lot of trouble instead: I hope that sooner or later light will be shed. We were chosen precisely to stop throwing Italians' money away”. These are the words of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in retort after the Chamber debate on communications ahead of the December 14-15 European Council. The so-called Superbonus is a tax break introduced in 2020 by the second Conte government, applied to incentivize the upgrading of buildings and at the same time to stimulate and lift the construction sector in crisis due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The measure turned out to be economically distorting and often exploited for scams by construction companies.
