Augusto Antonio Barbera has been unanimously elected as the new President of the Constitutional Court. He will serve until December 21, 2024, when his nine-year term as constitutional judge expires. As his first act as president, Professor Barbera appointed Judges Franco Modugno, Giulio Prosperetti, and Giovanni Amoroso as vice presidents. Born in Aidone in the Province of Enna on June 25, 1938, Barbera was elected a Constitutional Court judge by Parliament on December 16, 2015, and sworn in the following December 21. He is professor emeritus of Constitutional Law at the University of Bologna. He was elected to the Chamber of Deputies in the center-left for five terms between 1976 and 1994. From 1987 to 1992, he was chairman of the Parliamentary Commission for Regional Affairs, as well as, from 1983 to 1985, a member of the bicameral Commission for Constitutional Reforms (Bozzi Commission); since 1992, he has been vice-chairman of the bicameral Commission for Institutional Reforms (De Mita-Iotti Commission). In addition, he was among the promoters of the electoral referendums that led to the introduction of direct election of mayors and the overcoming of the proportional system.
