Mariangela Zappia, Italy's Ambassador to the United States, met yesterday with Muriel Bowser, Mayor of Washington, DC, with the goal of strengthening collaboration with the American capital in all areas. The Ambassador and the Mayor agreed on the possibility to further improve the teaching of the Italian language, which is already included in the curricula of six public schools in the city, as well as to explore cooperative initiatives for the promotion of sport. In 2023, the city featured notable Italian exhibitions such as Canova's at the National Gallery of Art, Leonardo's paintings in the Martin Luther King Library, and De Nittis' at the Phillips Collection, which was named one of the ten most important of the year by the Washington Post. The discussion also focused on economic partnership, which is facilitated by the direct flight links of ITA Airways and United, which are being strengthened and are also contributing to a rise in visitor flows to our nation. Investments in the Hitachi Rail region (previously Ansaldo Breda) for the supply of new Washington subway cars stand out in the economic arena. The Ambassador and the Mayor addressed future collaborations in several sectors, including agribusiness, as well as ways to improve the bond between the two capitals.
