Photojournalist Carlo Bavagnoli, whose shots made photography history, has died in Viterbo at 91. He was born in Piacenza, Italy, on May 5, 1932. His career began with the weekly magazine Epoca. Famous, however, were his shots for the editorial staff of Life, for which he was the only non-U.S. photographer. For the famous magazine he followed historical events such as the opening of the Second Vatican Council, the death of Pope John XXIII and the subsequent election of Pope Paul VI. For Life also famous shots included the cover that portrayed Jane Fonda as "Barbarella" but also historical reportages in Trastevere and among the "scugnizzi" of Naples. After his experience with the magazine, Bavagnoli worked for many years as a documentary director for RAI broadcast. He had been living in Viterbo since 2017.
