In Courmayeur, a French freerider skier died after sliding from a rock jump. The catastrophe happened while the man, a 60-year-old mountain guide, was attempting an off-piste descent. Rescue and resuscitation attempts were ineffective, and severe weather further hindered recovery operations. The other skiers in the group, who had been led by the victim to an authorized off-piste vehicle, raised the alarm.
