“In defense of the Republic. In the Service of the Country”. This was the title of the theme chosen for this year's Republic Day celebrations, which opened yesterday with the flag-raising at the Altar of the Fatherland and the homage to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier: here a laurel wreath was laid by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, accompanied by the highest offices of State. The tricolor arrows then flew over the Altar of the Fatherland with a team employing 10 Aermacchi MB-339 training planes modified for aerobatic displays, and ten pilots, all flight instructors with high qualifications from the Italian Air Force and selected according to experience, skill and expertise. From 10 a.m., the traditional military parade along Via dei Fori Imperiali, with the national anthem performed by singer-songwriter Claudio Baglioni.
