From speed cameras a flood of money to several small or medium-small Italian municipalities. An analysis by Assoutenti association, which examined data on road penalty revenue published by the Ministry of the Interior, shows that the most striking case is that of a small municipality in the Dolomites, Colle Santa Lucia (Bl), which despite counting little more than 350 inhabitants has collected 1,265,822 euros in the three-year period 2021-2023 thanks to the only speed camera installed on its territory, the equivalent of 3,616 euros per resident citizen. Salento municipalities in 2023 recorded multimillion euro takings thanks to automatic speed detection devices: more than 8.7 million euros in just four municipalities (4,770,631 euros Galatina, 1,830,484 euros Trepuzzi, 1,240,770 euros Cavallino, while the municipality of Melpignano stops at 898,986 euros). And another 2.3 million euros are the takings of only 3 municipalities (Puglianello, Castelvenere, Torrecuso) located along the Telesina state road 372 that leads from Caianello to Benevento, notoriously littered with speed cameras. Another road notorious for speed cameras is the Via Flacca that crosses the southern Lazio coastline: here the municipality of Terracina collected 2,177,914 euros last year thanks to speed detection devices, 506,886 euros went to Formia, and 365,326 euros to Gaeta.
