The Antitrust Authority has fined Meta 3.5 million euros for unfair commercial practices. According to the Competition and Market Authority, "during the Instagram registration process, users did not receive clear information about the collection and use of their data for commercial purposes." Furthermore, "in cases of Facebook and Instagram account suspensions, no useful information was provided for potential disputes." In response, a Meta spokesperson stated, "We disagree with the decision made by the AGCM and are evaluating possible actions to take. Since August 2023, we have implemented changes for Italian users to address the issues raised by the AGCM. We have clarified how we use data to show personalized ads on Instagram and provided users with additional information and options for appealing account suspensions."
