The three days of voting for the European Parliament concluded yesterday. In Italy, voter turnout was 48.2%, down from 56.1% in 2019. However, it included 23,734 out-of-town students who were able to vote for the first time away from their home municipalities. With 98.8% of the votes counted, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's party, Brothers of Italy (Fratelli d’Italia), emerged as the most voted party with 28.8% of the votes. The Democratic Party (Partito Democratico) secured second place with 24.1%. The Five Star Movement (Movimento 5 Stelle) came in third with 10%, a significant drop from the 17.1% they received in the previous European elections and 5 points lower than pre-election polls had predicted. By a narrow margin, Brothers of Italy (9.1%) surpassed Lega (9%). The Greens-Italian Left coalition saw a notable rise, gaining 6.8% and surpassing the 4% threshold to secure seats in Strasbourg. Carlo Calenda's party, Azione, and the Renzi-Bonino ticket with their United States of Europe proposal will not have any seats.
