The remains of a Roman villa dating from between the 1st and 4th centuries AD and a 5th-6th century basilica have surfaced from the countryside on the outskirts of Ravenna, not far from the airport. The discovery came during work at a construction site for the methane pipeline linked to the Punta Marina Terme regasifier. The excavations, which began in July 2023, are still ongoing over an area of about 1,600 square meters. Several structures deemed to be in a good state of preservation have been unearthed. This was an imposing suburban villa with a bath facility on the remains of which a church was later built, of which the plan with the wall foundations and a few floor fragments are still clearly visible. "A very important archaeological discovery that adds another piece to the history of the area," said Superintendent Federica Gonzato.
