Ilaria Salis will be a member of the European Parliament, elected by the Greens-Left Alliance. More than 160,000 votes were collected in the North-West and South by the Italian activist, who is currently under house arrest in Hungary. As a result, after 15 months in prison, the 39-year-old Milanese should be released and the trial against her suspended. This is in accordance with the "Privileges and Immunities of the European Union" Protocol 7. Article 9 specifically states that members of the European Parliament may enjoy "the immunities accorded to members of their Parliament" on national territory and "in the territory of any other Member State, immunity from any measure of detention and from legal proceedings". According to Salis' lawyers, the rule is retroactive and would therefore apply to events that occurred prior to the election. The same Protocol's Article 7 provides that "no administrative or other restriction shall be imposed on the free movement of members of the European Parliament travelling to or from the place of meeting of the European Parliament." . As a result, following the official proclamation, Ilaria Salis would be granted parliamentary immunity and thus released from prison.
